How to Import an Excel File with Column Mapping

You can import claim, payroll and policy data from any Excel file, even one that doesn't match the Mod Advisor template, such as a carrier loss run sent as a spreadsheet. Mod Advisor walks you through matching your tabs and columns to its fields.

Pick the right upload box

The import screen has two boxes:

  • Mod Advisor XLS Template (left): for Excel files in the Mod Advisor format, including files you exported from Mod Advisor or excel based loss runs from a carrier.

  • Carrier loss run (right): for loss runs from a carrier in a pdf format where data needs to be extracted.

Step 1: Map your tabs

On the setup screen, tell Mod Advisor which tab in your file holds which data. If a tab isn't already named Claims, Payroll or Policy, choose the matching Mod Advisor table from the drop-down. Then select Next.

Step 2: Map your columns

For each tab, you'll see a row for every Mod Advisor field with:

  • Column in Mod Advisor: the field being filled.

  • Column in your Excel file: the column it will pull from.

  • Mapped: whether a match was found.

  • Sample value: the kind of value Mod Advisor expects.

  • Preview: the actual value from your file.

If a field isn't mapped or is mapped to the wrong column, choose the right column from the drop-down. Compare the sample value and preview to make sure they match before you continue.

Step 3: Finish the import

Review the mappings and complete the import. Claims attach to policy periods by policy number and date of injury.

Tips

  • The Claims mapping includes many optional fields, such as body part, nature and cause. Mapping them unlocks more detail in reports and the Intelligence tab.

  • Leave a field unmapped if your file doesn't have it.

  • For PDF loss runs, see Uploading and Working with Loss Runs.
